Player Profile – Greg Merson

There are only a handful of players who have won the main event at the WSOP, but Greg Merson is the latest name to be added to the list. As the 2012 WSOP main event winner, Merson is now $8.5 million richer.

At just 24, Merson is relatively new to poker. However, even before the 2012 WSOP he was a poker professional. Grinding shorthanded cash games, Merson was making money from online poker on PokerStars and FullTilt.

Previous to the 2012 event Merson played in the WSOP events with some minor success. In fact, Merson’s biggest cash in any format of the game prior to his success in 2012 came with a 5% stake he had in the winner of the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure, which saw him pick up $50,000. Apart from that success, he had cashed for just over $40,000 in the Sunday second chance tournament on Stars.

Merson was named the best player of the WSOP 2012. Before his main series win, Merson won the $10,000 No Limit Texas hold 'em - Six Handed event, which would have been a specialist event. By winning this tournament he took down over $1.1 million.

This was an event that finished just one day before the WSOP main event, so to say 2012 has been a life-changing year for this online prodigy is clearly an understatement. At one point in the WSOP, Merson had two times the big blind, and yet he still won the event.

Merson’s life has not been plain sailing. In an interview that was conducted just after the WSOP 2012 event, Merson stated that he had overcome a cocaine and marijuana addiction in the past. Hopefully, now things are more plain sailing for the player who has taken down almost $10,000,000 in prize winnings at the WSOP.
