Player Profile – Johnny Chan

It is not easy being a professional poker player, but you would not know that when you look at the career of Johnny Chan. Chan has won ten bracelets from the World Series of Poker. This includes winning the 1987 and 1988 main events.

Chan states that he was successful playing poker at an early age because many people did not have experience playing against Asians. It was during the 1980s that Chan became famous for his poker skills when he won the WSOP main event two years in a row. In 1989, Chan almost won his third consecutive title, but came in second place. Currently, Chan is the last poker player to have won championships back to back. Some people think that he will hold that title forever due to the ever increasing size of the fields.

Chan entered the world of online poker, playing for one of the most well-known poker sites, Poker Stars. In 2005, he competed in a $400,000 invitational tournament on the site and after dropping down to only $20,000 in chips came back to take second place in the tournament. During the summer of 2005, he played the invitational again and made it to the finals. He then beat out Todd Brunson to take home the $400,000 prize.

Chan has also played on the show Poker after Dark. The show was a winner take all tournaments with a six-person field and a $20,000 buy in. To date, Chan has the most victories on the show winning four of the tournaments out of the six that he has played in.

Johnny Chan has a life outside of poker as well. He owns a fast-food franchise located in the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas and also works for several game makers and casinos as a consultant. Chan has also appeared in a couple of movies, including; Rounders and Poker King.
