The episodes written by George R. R. Martin have traditionally been some of the best of their particular season. Since he's the man who invented the characters that inhabit this world (and the world itself for that matter), it's only natural that he seems to have the deftest touch when it comes to creating episodes and writing for the characters. In his hands, the already sharp dialogue gets that much sharper, honed and clever without being forced. His scripts tend to feel very natural, which is pretty impressive when you have slaver kings being threatened by dragons.

But it’s the complex manoeuvrings of warring medieval-style noble families and their coterie of servile yet duplicitous advisers that make Game of Thrones Season 3 DVD such compulsive viewing. Beyond the clinking armour and buxom maidens, at its heart the series deals with an enduring concept: the struggle for power. It’s no surprise that the term "game of thrones" has cropped up in news reports to describe the Syrian civil war or the political skirmishes over US healthcare reforms.

This show has it all, mystery, drama, action, sex and nudity, monsters, magic and political intrigue. It's shot all over the world (Northern Ireland, Malta, Croatia, and Iceland) and the sets and costume design are amazing. Music by Ramin Djawadi is brooding, heavy, sad and exciting. This show is adult in nature and content, but speaks to the kid in me who dreams of sword fighting, joining battles and fighting for freedom, battling monsters and seeing Dragons and exotic women. This show is easily one of the best shows ever created. It's up there with The Wire, Breaking Bad, Lost, Shameless, Deadwood, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead and Justified. Shows that are pure escapism and a bit fantasy that are grounded in reality of the Human condition and that people can relate to. Granted I don't think any of us can relate to seeing sword fights and White Walkers or Dragons flying around, yet we can all relate to losing loved ones, being betrayed, and standing up for what is right and just. This show is an epic masterpiece, a classic that is sure to be talked about for years to come.
