Doyle Brunson - Profile

Quite simply, Doyle ‘Texas Dolly’ Brunson is a legend of poker. Poker Hall of Fame inductee, winner of 10 World Series of Poker bracelets, and the author of arguably the most respected poker book of all time, Super/System.

Brunson began playing poker long before it became the fashionable game we see today. There were no corporate sponsors, no global tournaments. Heck, there wasn’t even much safety and security for players. Brunson – along with other poker legends like Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts – would travel around Texas and the South, playing illegal games in places of disrepute. He admits that more than once he had a gun pulled on him, and that he has been robbed and mugged in the past.

Brunson won back to back WSOP Main Events in 1976 and 1977. In 1978 he published his magnum opus, Super/System. At the time it was a revolutionary idea; to give amateur players the insight into how players like Brunson were able to consistently win at poker. Super/System (sub-titled How I Made Over $1 Million Playing Poker) contains a biography of Brunson, followed by discussions of various elements of poker strategy. Some of the sections are written by Brunson’s contemporaries; Chip Reese writes about seven card stud, Bobby Baldwin writes about Limit hold’em, Mike Caro writes about draw poker. In 2004 Brunson revised the book and published Super/System 2. A younger generation of poker players wrote sections for the book, including Dan Negreanu, Jennifer Harman and Todd Brunson – Doyle’s son.

You know you are a poker legend when a hand is named after you, but what about two hands?! Brunson has two hands named after him. 10 and 2 is named after him as it is the hand that won him both Main Event tournaments in 1976 and 1977. AQ is also named after him because he famously never plays the hand, although in reality, he ‘tries to never play this hand.’

Brunson plays in the biggest cash games in the world, including the games in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. As of 2011 his total live tournament winnings exceeded $6 million. From the World Series alone he has nearly won $3 million.
