Player Profile – Chris Ferguson

As one of the most recognised people on the circuit Chris ‘Jesus' Ferguson is a player that has been around on the poker circuit for many years now. He is one of the few to win the WSOP main event, and he is often described as the most intelligent person in the game. Here, we will look at Chris Ferguson in more detail.

History and About

Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson has this nickname because of his appearance. He has a trademark long beard and hair, which many people assosiate with Jesus. He also generally wears a cowboy hat and sunglasses when he plays.

Ferguson was born in Los Angeles to very intelligent parents. In fact, both his mum and dad have doctoral degrees in mathematics. His father even teaches theoretical probability and game theory at UCLA University. Ferguson went to UCLA as a student earning a Ph.D in computer science in 1999.

It is believed that Ferguson started playing poker at just 10 years old taking an interest in the mathematical analysis of the game. It was not until 1994 when Ferguson started playing poker live, and in 1995, he earned enough to start playing at the WSOP.

Ferguson is currently involved in the news but for all the wrong reasons. He was a director of Full Tilt Poker and is currently involved in a legal case because of his alledged involvement in a ponzi scheme. Ferguson denies all the charges brought against him.

At the tables, Ferguson was one of the most feared professionals around. His first major success and arguably his biggest achievement was overcoming T.J Cloutier in 2000 to win the WSOP and the $1.5 million prize.

Ferguson has a strong record playing heads up no limit Hold’em poker. In 2005 and 2006 he came second at the National Heads-Up Poker Championship finishing behind Phil Hellmuth and Ted Forrest. In 2008, he finally won the tournament.

He is third in the all-time list of most cashes at the WSOP (63) with just over $4 million to his name. It is believed that he has total live earnings of over $8 million as well, which is well up there. Ferguson currently has five WSOP bracelets to his name, including his victory in the 2000 WSOP main event.

Due to his affiliation with Full Tilt Poker and strong mathematical background, he was the main man behind the deal structure that came into place on the final table of their tournaments.

Since the development of Black Friday, Chris Ferguson has not been seen on the poker tables. In September of 2011 is alleged that himself, Howard Lederer and Rafe Furst all illegally profited from the site, and his name was officially added to the case. Until there is some sort of settlement it is likely that Ferguson, Lederer and Furst will all keep a low profile, and even if they are cleared it could be that we may never see Ferguson at the tables again.
