How to notice a chase and stop it quickly

Too many players get caught up in hands they have no right to be in, and before they know it they are so committed to a pot they have no chance of winning that folding becomes the wrong move. Yes, from time to time the player may get lucky and spike something, but in the majority of cases, these players will be leaving with their tail between their legs. Here, we will explore how you can notice early on that you are chasing a hand.

Does it feel like the right call?

Too many players make moves on gut feelings, and this is not the right thing to do because in poker, every move should be calculated. However, if you are chasing something, you will get a gut feeling that you could be making a mistake. When you get this feeling, you should start working out if you have the right pot odds/implied odds to make the call. In any case, if you have been playing poker long enough you should get a feeling that you may be making the wrong move.

Calculate the odds

Working out your pot odds/implied odds is not too hard, even though it requires you to stop and think. If you are a new player, you don’t need to be spot on with your calculations. In any case if you are drawing to a flush you can assume your odds are about 4:1. If you are drawing to a straight, you can assume your odds are roughly 5:1.

If your odds are bigger than your chances of hitting – make the call.

If your odds are smaller – fold the hand.

If you are a new player, it is not always easy to recognise when you may be getting sucked into a hand you have no right to be in. However, the more hands you play the quicker you will be able to pick up on poor moves.
