History of Texas Holdem

No one seems to know the exact origins of Texas hold’em poker, although it is thought to have been created in Robstown, Texas in the early part of the 20th century.
During the late 1960s, card players including Doyle Brunson and Amarillo Slim introduced the game to Las Vegas. When Benny Binion moved the World Series of Poker to his Horseshoe Casino in Vegas in 1970, the Main Event was no-limit Texas hold’em and has stuck since. It is rather humorous to think that the 1972 Main Event attracted eight entrants.
Last year it attracted 7,319. Surely those card players of the early 70s could not have fathomed the heights the game would reach in the space of forty years. When Brunson published his Super System in 1978 it changed the way poker was played forever. It was the first book to discuss strategy and offer anecdotes of the past, which gave players a crash course in poker and opened the game up to a much wider audience. No longer was poker a game played by shifty characters in smoky back rooms. It was a respected pastime, even a profession for the few who mastered the game.

The birth of the internet and the subsequent online gambling boom of the 21st century have ensured that hold’em has gone from strength to strength and is arguably the most popular card game in the world now. After an amateur – Chris Moneymaker – won the Main Event in 2003 poker was seen as a universal game, available to all at the highest level.
There are now television channels devoted entirely to poker and it is estimated that the online gambling industry is worth $30 billion, with no signs of letting up in the future. With Macau in the East and Vegas in the West acting as the strongholds of casinos and poker, Texas Hold’em has been the biggest casino game of the last decade.
